Versatility is the key to making the shortlist for the South China Morning Post Student of the Year competition, judges have revealed.

They have chosen 15 semi-finalists from the 117 Form Six and Form Seven students nominated.

Qualities the judges looked for included not only the ability to get good academic results, but also leadership potential and enthusiasm for extra-curricular activities and social service.

'These students have taken part in many extra-curricular activities, including music and sport,' said judge Elim Lau, the principal of Diocesan Girls' School.

Ms Lau urged all students to develop different interests and talents as early as during their primary and junior secondary years.

The 15 shortlisted candidates will be interviewed later this month by Deputy Director of Education Kwan Ting-fai and Education Commission head Rosie Young Tse-tse.
