Delays to construction at Chek Lap Kok station have made it difficult to speed up work on the airport railway, it was revealed yesterday.

The Mass Transit Railway Corp said the late handing-over of the station site by the Airport Authority was a factor in its inability to bring forward the railway's June completion to April.

Sources said the station was not handed over until the third quarter of last year, some six months late.

Lantau and Airport Rail project manager Gordon Crighton would not confirm the length of the delay, but admitted it was 'one of the factors' hampering acceleration works.

'The station was late but we recovered the delays through electrical and mechanical works,' he said, maintaining a train was run into the station on December 29 as originally scheduled.

Sources said another factor preventing an April completion was the poor summer weather, which hampered track work.
