Faxes fly over Beijing bid

MUCH righteous tut-tutting this week at the palatial Swiss chateau where the members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) hold court.

Apparently, secret word had come through (and I wonder whether the messenger had an Australian accent!) that Ms Leonie Ki Men-fung, chairman of Grey Advertising in Hongkong, was actively working - in a personal capacity, it is believed - in promoting Beijing's bid to host the 2000 Olympic games.

What's wrong in that? Nothing really, if one chooses to ignore the fact that Grey/GCI of New York (the parent of the Hongkong-based company) handles marketing and communications for the IOC.

After urgent faxes had been exchanged between Lausanne, New York and Hongkong, the matter was amicably settled, and Ms Ki will no longer be dissipating her energies on behalf of the Beijing bid.
