AGROUP of pop singers will put up a show tonight as a way of saying thank you to fans and youngsters for doing their bit for charity. The concert, at the Academic Community Hall in Kowloon Tong, is jointly organised by Commercial Radio and charity organisation Yan Oi Tong. In addition to support from local secondary schools, the Junior Police Call, the Community Youth Club, pop fans also joined their idols last week in raising funds for the charity group on its annual flag day. Singers including Sandy Lam, Shirley Kwan, Hacken Lee, Alex To, Dicky Cheung, Anthony Lun and Grasshoppers together with their fans solicited donations from the public throughout the territory. The Yan Oi Tong chairman, Mr Casey Ho Kwan-chu, said it was a successful drive and the response was very encouraging. ''This year's programme raised $2 million, the highest amount in our history. It also doubled last year's figure,'' he said. All proceeds would go towards maintaining their present services and promote social welfare work, he said. They include education, recreation and sports, medical, activities for elderly, youth and children. New services will be added this year, including the opening of a community centre, a child care centre, an elderly centre and family service centre in Tai Po, Yuen Long, Tuen Mun and Kwai Tsing districts. In addition to government subvention, the balance would depend on generous donation from the public, said Mr Ho. Speaking at a recent press conference, Commercial Radio's assistant programme director, Ms Li Pik-sum, praised the active participation of pop fans. She hopes more teenagers will show concern towards society and take part in social services. Commercial Radio together with Yan Oi Tong are staging the charity concert tonight to express their gratitude. Nine singers who took part in the flag day, will come together and give a performance. The idols will perform not only their latest hits on stage but play games with fans. For this, the best creative award will be presented to the singer and his or her fans. In addition, the highest fund-raising award will be announced at the prize presentation. The concert will be broadcast on Commercial Radio One at 6.15 pm on Sunday.
