IBM ThinkPad 770 optimises mobile computing and is touted by its makers as the next generation of 'extreme performance' solutions.

   The 770 is aimed at customers who want the most advanced mobile computing technology available.

  IBM claims it is the first in a new series of mobile computing solutions that integrate powerful processors and multimedia capabilities with maximum-sized displays, advanced communications, massive data storage and optional Windows NT support.

  The ThinkPad 770 is powered by a 233 MHz Pentium MMX Mobile Module processor, has a 14-inch screen, standard 32MB SDRAM, expandable to 256, and a storage capacity of 5.1GB.

  The multimedia features include high-speed CD-ROM and optional DVD drive, surround sound, support for advanced 3-D graphics, MPEG 2 video playback and Zoomed video.

  'The ThinkPad 770 is a watershed for IBM, signalling a year of constant improvements from the ThinkPad division', said an IBM spokesman.

  The mobility factor has also been addressed with improved functionality including a powerful fax modem, telephony support via RingCentral and Intel's Video Phone software.

   Fast and reliable communications are the cornerstone of working successfully in an interconnected world and IBM believes the 770 is a prime example.

   The 770 also features a variety of docking solutions that IBM says provide a superior level of convenience allowing the user to follow a natural progression of upgrades.

  'Users will find the IBM ThinkPad best used in situations where its price justifies either strong multimedia capabilities, decision support, or spreadsheet applications,' an IBM spokesman said.

  One of the next generation to come from IBM will be a mid-range priced slimline ThinkPad incorporating internal bays and weighing 5.5lbs or less with a 13.3-inch screen. It is expected to be released in the second half of this year.

 IBM has also recently upgraded the Aptiva S Series which now incorporates a host of multimedia features and new technologies. The series ranges from those powered by Pentium Ii 233MHz right up to a 266 PII. The model comes standard with 32MB SDRAM, from 4.2GB to 6.4 GB hard disk, and a 15-inch screen.
