I am writing in response to the letter titled 'Parents are not ignorant or prejudiced' written by John P.L. Wong (South China Morning Post, December 8), concerning the decision by the Education Department to introduce Cantonese as a compulsory medium of teaching in secondary schools. I agree with Mr Wong that the authorities were unfair in implementing this policy, as it excludes some elite schools and government schools. The authority is also a bit irresponsible and autocratic in carrying out the policy without consulting the parents of the students. In my opinion, using Chinese as a medium of teaching will not encourage students to learn, but will actually lower standards as it might cause students to think it is much easier for them to handle the subjects they are studying.
