Leading trainer Lawrie Fownes appears to have snapped up a useful recruit in the shape of yesterday's opening trial winner, Brilliant Way.

The Irish import, who has just turned four, was a good two-year-old for Dermot Weld when backed down to odds-on to make a winning debut at The Curragh.

This he duly did, scampering away with his maiden before running a creditable third in Group Three company and then finding the opposition far too tough in the Group One National Stakes which is one of Ireland's two top juvenile events.

The son of Ian Balding's champion miler, Selkirk, then came out at three and ran a good race when second on his reappearance.

After that he was somewhat disappointing but this beautifully bred sort appears to have had his enthusiasm rekindled by the move to Fownes' stable.

He was first noted when staying on strongly to the line in a grass trial down the straight 1,000-metre chute and yesterday he was again doing all his best work at the finish when coming away to score by three-quarters of length in the first of three dirt trials.
