An electronics shop closed yesterday after the Consumer Council received complaints from customers saying they had been duped into believing they would get free gifts with their purchases. Police are investigating nine complaints received by the council about Kat Lam Trading Company at 189 Apliu Street, Shamshuipo. The chairman of the Consumer Council's Trade Practices Committee, William Chao, said complainants had said sales staff misled them. Sales assistants had given them the impression they would receive an expensive gift, such as a hand-held television, if they bought certain products. They had said it was not made clear to them that they would be entered into a draw and would have to win the gifts. Mr Chao said the complainants had bought products they did not really want because of the gift offer. He warned shoppers to be wary when offered free gifts.
