The chairman of the Housing Authority, Dame Rosanna Wong Yick-ming, may be called to testify as a defence witness in a civil case over the ownership rights of a flat.

Wong Cho Chun-may, 71, is battling for the right to keep her Chevalier Garden flat in Ma On Shan, Sha Tin, the District Court heard yesterday.

The mother-of-seven bought the flat in 1987 after her home at Wang Tau Hom Estate was redeveloped.

She said she feared she would not understand the formalities involved in making the purchase so asked her son, Wong Chiu-fai, to help.

Mrs Wong said she had been told by a district officer she was not eligible to buy a property under the Home Ownership Scheme in her name and had to have the name of one other person.

Lawyers for Mrs Wong said the Housing Authority chairman, or a representative, could be called to clarify the terms of eligibility.

Mrs Wong's son helped her complete the purchase, for around $174,000, by also signing the agreement. He said he would take care of the monthly mortgage installments of $800, which she paid him, the court heard.
