Austrian-born Andy Suborics decided on an early flight to Hong Kong hoping to convince trainers that he's well worth taking a chance with over the next month. A broken collarbone and six weeks on the sidelines cost Suborics last season's German jockey's title but the British championship did not mean much in the case of Kieren Fallon who had one local winner in just over three weeks. 'It's hard and I have only got a month. But I am going around seeing all the trainers and I have at least had some rides now at Happy Valley in the trials. 'I enjoyed this experience and it makes me wish for the real thing. I hope that I can get some rides at the next meeting and I will be working here for the whole holiday period when there is trackwork,' said Suborics, whose biggest success was the Group One Prix de la Foret. Suborics is hoping to better the record of German Peter Schiergen who rode two winners during his month two years ago. He has the advantage of being a fluent English speaker where Schiergen was forced to use an interpreter. 'He doesn't say much anyway, which doesn't matter in Germany where everyone knows him anyway. But I know it should be a help in Hong Kong for me. What will matter is getting on a horse that can win so that people will see that I can ride,' said Suborics at Happy Valley yesterday. An unraced import bought by well-known local owner Daniel Zigal has been put down in an extraordinary case of deja vu. Trained by Wong Tang-ping, Zigal's newcomer lashed out in his stall and caught his hoof and leg up in the stable door. The horse panicked, sustained a break and had to be put down. Senior vet Keith Watkins said: 'It was almost uncanny. When I checked the records, another horse owned by Daniel Zigal a few years ago went almost exactly the same way. 'I think he was called Bogota and on that occasion we were still using the old stable doors. It was quite amazing and obviously extremely unfortunate.' Meanwhile, legendary Australian jockey Mick Dittman has five mounts at today's Macau Jockey Club meeting. Best of his mounts looks to be in the final event on Phat Rung. Dittman is at Taipa for the four-meeting Macau Lunar New Year Festival of Racing.
