TWO of Macau's most dangerous prisoners escaped from Coloane Island's maximum security jail last night as wardens struggled to break up a brawl in which one inmate was killed.

Lam Sio-va, 26, was serving a 15-year sentence for robbery and was one of the notorious ''Rolex Gang'' which robbed more than 20 people of their watches in 1991. Five of the gang's victims died from injuries.

Lau Cheok-lung, also 26, was serving a sentence of 241/2 years for last April's Banco Nacional Ultramarino robbery in which a bank guard was shot dead at point blank range.

In November last year, the trial judge ordered that Lau serve his full sentence.

The prisoners are believed to have escaped after a fight broke out between two groups of prisoners shortly after dinner at 6.30 pm.

After prison officers separated the two groups, they found Lei Kwong-choi, 34, lying unconscious in a pool of blood.
