AN estate agent's assistant sales manager who ''betrayed her client'' by conspiring to solicit a bribe was yesterday ordered to carry out 240 hours of community service.

Magistrate Mr Peter Line told Polly Chong Chui-ha, 30, he had grave doubts about ''distinguishing [her] so dramatically'' from her co-accused. The latter was sentenced to three months in prison on March 5, but granted bail pending an appeal.

The only reason the magistrate made the distinction was because the bribe was not Chong's idea, but that of her co-accused.

In return for $200,000 Chong would promise her client that a property would not be sold to another client who claimed to be offering a higher price.

Both Chong and Shing Man-on, 35, agent for the vendor of the property, were found guilty of conspiring to solicit an advantage.

Sentencing Chong at Eastern Court yesterday, Mr Line said Chong had told the community service organiser the offence was committed in ignorance of the law.
