The main political parties were divided over yesterday's High Court verdict to grant right of abode to more mainland children of Hong Kong residents.

The Democratic Party welcomed the decision, saying it 'confirmed that Hong Kong people are under the protection of the Basic Law'.

But party spokesman Law Chi-kwong warned the Government would need to re-estimate the number of children coming to Hong Kong and discuss co-ordination with mainland officials.

Liberal Party chairman Allen Lee Peng-fei said he was not surprised by the verdict.

He urged the SAR Government to co-operate with the mainland to prevent an influx of illegal migrants.

Gary Cheng Kai-nam of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong expressed the same worries.
