Last 'drive' into history as ferry service halts

The only remaining way for the public to 'drive' over Victoria Harbour - aboard the vehicular ferry - was consigned to history this week.

Tunnels are now the only means for drivers to cross the harbour, after the ferry made its last crossing on Tuesday.

With dwindling use, the North Point to Kowloon City route was the last to be axed as two ferries made their final crossings at 7.40 pm from North Point and Kowloon City.

The last passengers to board the Man Wing were taxi owner and driver So Yan-yiu and his sons Chun-hei, 13, and Chun-fung, eight.

'I wanted to witness the closure of a chapter in Hong Kong's history,' said Mr So, 50.

'My sons had not taken the vehicular ferry before and I wanted them to have a chance to experience what it was like.' The Ngau Tsz Wan family was determined to be the last to take the North Point ferry.

'I waited for half an hour. I pulled over until all the other cars got on first,' Mr So said.

Staff handed motorists souvenir packs as they drove through the toll booth for the last time.

The only vehicular ferry remaining is North Point to Kwun Tong, reserved for lorries with dangerous goods, which are not allowed to use the tunnels.
