Never-ending

Below my flat on Victoria Road the Highways Department has been carrying out roadworks for the past two years.

At either end of the works area there is a large yellow sign showing the completion date of the project.

From the day these works started, the date on the sign has shown the last day of the current month and at the end of each month the date is changed to the end of the following month.

It is quite clear the Highways Department has never intended to meet the completion date shown, so it really does beg the question: why on earth does it bother? SIMON McCRUM Central
