Confectionery-maker Van Melle yesterday said it would temporarily close its plant in the mainland, due to the financial crisis in Asia. The Dutch group said the main reason for the decision was 'the financial crisis in Asia and the subsequent expected pressure on sales volumes in the region'. Van Melle said it would take one-off charges of 13 million guilders (about HK$49.34 million) against last year's results to cover a writedown of the factory's value and costs of the temporary closure.
