National legislature chief Qiao Shi yesterday urged Hong Kong-based officials of mainland institutions not to interfere in the SAR.

 They should respect and support the SAR Government, said Mr Qiao, Chairman of the National People's Congress.

 He was speaking to officials from Xinhua, the Hong Kong office of the Foreign Ministry, the People's Liberation Army and mainland-funded enterprises.

 They included Xinhua Director Jiang Enzhu, the ministry's commissioner, Ma Yuzhen, and PLA commander Lieutenant-General Liu Zhenwu.

 Xinhua said the officials were asked to abide by the Basic Law and implement the 'one country, two systems' policy.

 Mr Qiao, who was greeted at the airport by Tung Chee-hwa and his top aides, is to meet community leaders at a lunch hosted by the Chief Executive at Government House today.

 Security was tight at the airport and roads were cordoned off for his entourage as they drove to the Li Ka-shing-owned Harbour Plaza Hotel on the Hunghom waterfront.

 The NPC chief, who is due to retire next month, will be greeted by several groups of protesters on his first day of official activities today.

 Members of the Alliance in Support of the Patriotic Democratic Movement in China will demand a reversal of Beijing's verdict on the June 4 massacre and the release of all jailed dissidents.

 Spokesman Cheung Man-kwong said protesters would also demand an independent investigation committee to trace responsibility for the massacre.

 He said a list of victims should be compiled and published.

 Newly selected deputy Allen Lee Peng-fei said he would ask Mr Qiao for the quick setting up of a local NPC office.
