Container handling at Hong Kong port is forecast to grow 7 per cent to 15.5 million teu (20-ft equivalent units) this year, the Port Development Board says.
Board chairman Peter Thompson said the port handled 14.5 million teu last year, maintaining its position as the world's busiest container port for six years.
He said the board was monitoring changes in the shipping industry and demands on the port to be able to respond quickly to its growing needs.
The board would then advise the Government on a port development strategy in answer to any requirements.
In the board's 1996-97 annual report Mr Thompson said new and challenging opportunities would open well into the next century.
With careful planning the SAR could look forward to an era of continuing prosperity for Hong Kong port, he said.
