No excuse for ignoring Games

My thanks to S. F. Morimura for his letter headlined, 'Let down by TV stations' (South China Morning Post, February 11).

I thought I was the only person searching my four TV channels nightly for some news of this year's Winter Olympics in nearby Nagano, Japan.

Shocking really that there has been no coverage on these channels of this international, historic event. What is all this I hear about promoting fitness and sports in Hong Kong? Too bad they don't have windsurfing, ping-pong or horse-racing in the Winter Olympics. Maybe then we'd get to see it.

I do not know the real reasons behind Hong Kong TV stations choosing to ignore the Olympics, but I too would like an explanation. Surely the reason can't be lack of finances nor lack of interest in 'snow sports'. If a distant Third World country like Zimbabwe can not only get a bobsled team into the Olympics (as it did several years ago), but also provide television coverage in the country, as it has been doing for a long time, I would have assumed someone with a TV camera from Hong Kong could have taken the three-hour flight to Nagano.
