We first dropped by Bravo le cafe the night before the Lunar New Year holiday, but we abandoned the idea because it looked as if it were about to close up for the night.
And frankly, another rendition of That's Why (You Go Away) by Michael Learns To Rock - which had already been played three times in succession while one of us waited for the other - was enough to put anyone off their appetites.
The cafe's location, tucked behind an escalator on Connaught Road Central, a thoroughfare choked with pollution and reverberating from the constant roar of traffic, seemed a curious choice.
It must be the lure of the Exchange Square suit brigade, we decided. In any case, everyone needs a sanctuary in life amid such dreary gloom, and with inauspicious neighbours such as Cafe de Coral, Hardee's and McDonald's, Bravo looks a beacon of brilliance, with its warm glow spilling on to the street.
On our return, it was already gaining points in our books.
A quick glance at the menu clearly posted outside - a thoughtful idea that avoids the need for awkward departures should you decide the place does not pass muster - rewarded with a reasonable selection of East-meets-West dishes at bargain-basement prices.
