South China face a tough test tonight in their Far East Club Championship opening game against J.League champions Jubilo Iwata at Zhabei Stadium, Shanghai. Their three new signings - former Chinese international youth midfielder Gong Lei, American-based forward Sheldon Thomas and Belgian defender Peter Geraerts - are likely to start tonight. But the Caroliners, gradually returning to form after a disappointing start to the season, will be missing forward Dale Tempest, who pulled a thigh muscle during Hong Kong team training last week. And Hong Kong right-back Yau Kin-wai is nursing an ankle injury. Team director Peter Leung Shou-chi said South China would go all out for victory. 'But it is not going to be easy for us,' he cautioned. 'If we are lucky enough to win either one of the two group matches, we will at least go through to the third-place play-off.' The Caroliners will be spearheaded by Hong Kong striker Au Wai-lun and Thomas. Gong will join right-winger Lee Kin-wo, young midfielder Yeung Ching-kwong and left-winger Chan Chi-hong in the midfield. Geraerts, who last played for Dutch First Division side Maastricht MVV, will play in defence with Poon Man-tik - who replaces Yau at right-back- veteran Ku Kam-fai and Ng Chun-chung. Kevin Lok Kar-win will be in goal. Jubilo will be without their four internationals - midfielders Toshihiro Hattori, Hiroshi Nanami and Toshiya Fujita and veteran striker Masashi Nakayama. South China have been drawn in the same group as Jubilo and China's Dalian Wanda.
