The buses will keep running, union leaders promised. Members of the Motor Transport Workers' General Union made the pledge after meeting with Transport Department officials. 'All our staff will continue to serve the public and keep the buses running as usual,' said the union's chief negotiator, Tong Chiu-yin. Deputy Commissioner for Transport Dorothy Chan Yuen Tak-fai and Assistant Commissioner for Labour Tsang Kin-woo told the union of Exco's decision. 'In response, we demanded the new operator arrange for all the employees to remain in their posts,' Mr Tong said. Mrs Chan had promised to do everything possible and consult the union over staffing, he said. Of about 2,300 staff on the CMB payroll, half were full-time drivers, Mr Tong said. The Labour Department has set up two telephone hotlines - 2922-7000 and 2922-6006 - to answer staff inquiries about rights and benefits.
