A schoolgirl's obsession for a young man drove him to kill her, a court heard yesterday.

 Fong Kin, 19, suffocated and throttled 17-year-old Hung Fong-ling after she turned vicious and threatened to have his younger sister raped, defence barrister John Haynes claimed.

 Mr Justice Mohammed Saied jailed Fong for four years after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

 Mr Haynes described Fong-ling as 'an extrovert and perverse person unable to admit her faults'.

 After Fong moved out of his family home and rented a flat in Yuen Long last April, she asked to move in with him on May 11.

 'This headstrong young girl came to his flat almost as soon as she heard he had his own place,' Mr Haynes told the Court of First Instance.

 Fong-ling gave her mother a false address and told her boyfriend she was living with a girl she knew from primary school. But her intentions became clear soon after she moved in.

 Mr Haynes said: 'The girl had clearly formed some sort of passionate idea about this young man. He resisted her advances which, no doubt, created an atmosphere of tension.'  Shortly after Fong-ling's arrival, Fong borrowed $500 from her. 'That $500 was to prove to be the downfall of both of them,' Mr Haynes said.

 On the surface, the dispute appeared to be about money but had more to do with a young girl's frustrated passion, he added.

 Mr Haynes said: 'She's thinking: 'I'm extremely keen on you and you aren't responding very well. I want to be your girlfriend and you won't have me'.

 'She was used to getting her own way and determined to overbear this young man.'  Fong-ling threatened Fong and his family with physical violence unless he repaid the loan.

 Early on May 22, a gang of youths attacked Fong as he rode home on his bicycle.

 'Rightly or wrongly, he was sure that it was part of the girl's threats,' said Mr Haynes.

 Fong escaped his attackers and went home to confront the girl.

 In the argument that followed, she threatened to have Fong's younger sister raped unless he returned her money.

 Fong punched her and the girl grabbed a knife. But Fong disarmed her and suffocated her with a bed quilt before strangling her with a belt.

 He ran out of the flat, leaving Fong-ling's body lying on the bed. Fong later tried to take his own life.

 Mr Haynes said: 'He has the most horrific nightmares. He is constantly pursued by the ghost of the girl he killed.'
