Sun Microsystems has released a software package tailor-made to the freight forwarding industry's needs, in partnership with International Transport Information Systems (Itis) and Innovative Information Systems.

Sun is combining the Itis freight operation and management system with the Ultra Enterprise 450 server to provide a freight forwarding package capable of supporting more than 16 concurrent users and streamlining all aspects of import and export operations.

Sun Microsystems' sales director Danny Tam said: 'The Transportation and freight-forwarding functions are ideally suited to automation through electronic data interchange (EDI) and the Sun-Itis solution is a perfect fit.' The new software covers everything from flight and shipping schedules, freight documents and invoicing, cargo manifests to purchase order tracking and cargo tracking.

Sun said the software also would enable freight documents to be sent and tracked via the Internet, or through EDI messaging formats.

Satti Wong, Itis managing director, said the benefits of EDI and automation in the transport sector included increased efficiency, lower costs and closer relationships with partners.
