Unseeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland yesterday beat top-seeded Jana Novotna of the Czech Republic in the final of the US$450,000 Faber Grand Prix women's tournament in Hanover, Germany.

Schnyder, who had earlier beaten Sabine Appelmans of Belgium in the semi-finals, started brilliantly against Novotna, taking the first set 6-0. But Novotna quickly struck back taking the second set 6-2 before Schnyder regained control to win the decider 7-5.

Novotna, the world number three, had eliminated 16-year-old Russian star Anna Kournikova 6-3, 6-3 in her semi-final match.
