Guangzhou is to stop using the city's official emblem and anthem. The decision by the Guangzhou Government had been taken to preserve the dignity of the national emblem and national anthem, the Hong Kong China News Agency reported. Official stamps bearing the Guangzhou city emblem which are still in the manufacturer's possession will be handed over to the City Museum for permanent preservation. The city anthem, The Song of Guangzhou, will no longer be sung. The decision will also affect all propaganda material, buildings and vehicles that carry the emblem. All city emblems which have been put up or engraved will be destroyed. Political observers said the move was in line with Guangzhou's decision to demonstrate its willingness to toe the line of the central authorities. The news agency said the Municipal People's Congress had voted to support the decision of the municipal government.
