Proposed fares of up to $150 for the Airport Railway Express were yesterday rejected by the Transport Advisory Committee. The Mass Transit Railway Corporation gave members several fare options ranging between $100 and $150 for the 35-kilometre Central to Chek Lap Kok trip. They included an additional $20 to $30 'baggage handling' fee for luggage checked in in the city. But members objected to fares exceeding $100 and any baggage fees. Committee chairman Dr Cheng Hon-kwan said the MTRC should instead look at offering more concessions. 'We have strong reservations on [the lack] of concessionary fares for senior citizens - they tried to omit that, but seniors should have concessions,' Dr Cheng said. 'We also feel it is unreasonable to have to pay a fee to check-in downtown.' So many charges would hurt local travellers and commuters as well as tourists. 'Nowhere else is this kind of fare charged . . . we should not add further burdens on tourists,' he said. The MTRC was considering a daily travel concession allowing up to 20 per cent discounts on same-day return fares to the airport. The corporation said no decision would be made on fares until further consultation with relevant parties. Taxi fares from Central to the new airport are expected to exceed $350 while airport buses will charge about $30 to $40. Members endorsed proposals for a $21 fare to Tung Chung new town on the Airport Express' adjacent line. Members also endorsed fare increases for New Lantao Bus services of nine per cent. If passed by Executive Councillors the fares will take effect from April.
