THE sword hangs over some of the players in the original 21-strong rugby union sevens squad picked after the Bill Riach tournament last month.
For today, coach Jim Rowark and assistant Rodney McIntosh, together with the selectors, will re-pick a fresh squad who will be in contention to play in the Hong Kong Sevens, the Japan Sevens and the Paris Sevens.
'We will look at the original squad again and players could be brought in,' said Rowark yesterday.
McIntosh put it more bluntly. 'We will name a new squad of 21 players tomorrow. We have always maintained that the doors will be kept open for any player who impresses.' Those 10 players already picked for the Fiji Sevens in mid-March can breathe easier. Their places are not in jeopardy and they still hold pole position to win berths in the squad for the Hong Kong Sevens.
A truncated sevens tournament yesterday, organised by the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union, offered the selectors some indication of who the form players are.
A revitalised Jon Dingley, who missed out on being picked to the original squad as he was unavailable, made the most of the opportunity and impressed on a day where the action was curtailed by depleted teams put out by Kowloon and DeA.
