Former champion trainer Brian Kan Ping-chee loves Derby Day in Hong Kong and he celebrated yesterday with another winning double as the stable maintained its recent excellent form. And Kan has a good young 'un in namesake Willie K.Y. Kan, who did very well on Hornet (12-1) in the Class Three fifth event. She kept the now well-tried galloper balanced in a hectic finish with Brett Doyle on Yellow River (14-1) and scored by a neck. It was a back-to-back double for the long-serving trainer as stable jockey Felix Coetzee had brought home bottomweight Good Connection (10-1) in the previous event. Kan said: 'It is not quite like winning the Derby, but it is a very good day to have winners on. I liked Good Connection quite a lot and the girl is a good rider because she listens well and does what she is told. 'She has good hands and balance and I will give her a lot more chances.' The young claimer also rode an intelligent race in the nightcap, when she finished second to Billion Win, and the trainer could have had a treble for the day but smart Gold Mark found one too good in Genius. Coetzee is also enjoying an excellent spell and he was again seen to advantage on bottomweight Good Connection, who held off last start-winner Plenty Success (10-1) in a driving finish to the Class Three, 2,000-metre staying test. Favourite Quick Speed (3-1) did not have the easiest of runs but battled doggedly under Basil Marcus and finished a further head away in third place, with second favourite, Seasons Wind (9-2), weakening slightly into fourth. Hornet jumped from the extreme outside in the 14-runner longer sprint so it was full marks to young Kan, who is more than value for her maximum claim. Horses do run along for her and Hornet gladly stuck his neck out when it mattered to deny Yellow River, with honest Kevmate (6-1) running a solid third. Favourite Red Zone (3-1) and Win For Us (7-2 second favourite), who missed the start, finished in the pack. Red Zone had won on his debut at Happy Valley and thoroughly impressed but was facing tougher company yesterday.
