Some government officials might not be accustomed to confronting the press, it was claimed yesterday. The claim from Principal Assistant Secretary for Home Affairs Parrish Ng Ching-man concerned the row between a government secretary and a television programme host. Secretary for Education and Manpower Joseph Wong Wing-ping wants an apology from ATV management after talk-show host Albert Cheng King-hon accused him of being afraid to show his face in public. Mr Wong had refused to appear on Cheng's show on unemployment last Monday. Mr Wong claims he was given just a few hours' notice to appear on the programme and had other engagements. When asked about the row at a seminar on open and accountable government yesterday, Mr Ng said 'some officials may not be used to facing the press'. Mr Ng said the Government and the media were experiencing a 'fair' and 'mutually beneficial' relationship. 'A lot of training courses on confronting the press have been initiated, and it is one of our duties to deal with the reporters,' Mr Ng said.
