Edward Chiu is one of the most sought-after guests at fancy-dress parties, having arrived at such affairs as everyone from Michael Jackson to King Tutankhamun. But by day, the party live wire is a serious jewellery designer. Edward says that when he designs a piece of jewellery for a client, he takes into consideration his client's personality to produce something unique. He likes to base his designs on nature and butterfly and flowers motifs feature in most of his jewellery. Asked why he goes to such lengths to dress up - he researches, designs and gets his costumes specially made - Edward says: 'When I do something I put in 200 per cent. Either I go all the way or I don't do it at all.' Edward went to the Hong Kong Bayanihan Trust Fiesta '97 ball in October last year as King Tut. The golden mask was custom-made for $10,000 and his shoes were specially made in India. 'The funny thing that night was that when I spoke while wearing that mask, it misted up the lenses of the eyes so I couldn't see a thing, so I just relied on people's voices to recognise who I was talking to,' he said.
