Empty doctors' quarters at the Prince of Wales Hospital are to be converted into homes for the elderly.

Hospital Authority chief executive Dr Yeoh Eng-kiong said discussions were taking place with the Land Corporation and property developers to earmark spaces for such homes.

'New housing projects could provide an area to build homes for the aged,' Dr Yeoh told the Finance Committee.

The quarters were left vacant after the failure to lure tenants at rentals half the market price. A government spokesman had said 14 flats were to be used as homes for the elderly.

The exodus of nurses from the Hospital Authority would be almost halved to 6.5 per cent this year, Dr Yeoh said. Recruits for the 1997-98 financial year rose by 700.
