Seldom seeing conflicts on multiple-use trails

I refer to the letter from D. A. Taylor on the use of bicycles in country parks, which appeared in the South China Morning Post, on March 4.

When I see a letter from someone so seriously misinformed, I simply must respond.

I am a hiker and mountain biker who has spent literally thousands of hours on trails in the United States, Hong Kong, and elsewhere.

All trails that I ride on in the US are multiple-use trails, with hikers, bikers, and equestrians.

Over the years, I have almost never experienced a conflict between users.

When I have, it has always been as a result of someone (often a hiker) who refuses to share the trail with other users.

If people put aside misguided emotion and look at the facts, they will see that the vast majority of mountain bikers are health-conscious people who ride on dirt trails for exercise, fun, and to enjoy nature. Yes, there will always be a few who are not careful enough.
