Xinjiang representatives have called on the NPC to take steps to safeguard social stability and boost economic development.
The Government is reported to have increased funding to the country's western areas, including Xinjiang, with money specially designated for local industry and infrastructure projects.
Each year, the autonomous region receives more than 6.5 billion yuan (HK$6 billion) in subsidies from the Central Government.
Over the past five years, Xinjiang has attracted 4.7 billion yuan from other areas of the country, Xinhua reported.
'Xinjiang is witnessing a stable situation, rapid economic growth and marked improvement in the local people's living standards,' Ablait Abdurexit, chairman of the autonomous regional people's Government, told Xinhua.
The chairman's background as a minority national was used to illustrate how systemic changes had helped someone like him gain a college education and eventually a seat in local government.
