Veteran galloper Nervous Witness is working with the zest of a three-year-old.
The Geoff Lane-trained gelding hasn't won since the start of last season but he's crept down the handicap scale and appears to have been revitalised by a move to Lane's yard.
Lane does well with his small team and it is surprising, given his successes over the past few seasons, that he hasn't picked up more horses.
Nervous Witness has run two good races on each of his past two starts, without having too much luck, and yesterday's work at Sha Tin underlined that he can be placed to advantage before retirement.
Yesterday he clocked a very handy 23.7 seconds for his final 400 metres under Glen Boss, completing his 800-metre hitout in 51.1 seconds. This comfortable workout follows a most pleasing trial down the straight 1,000-metre chute when he fairly skipped to the line.
Nervous Witness holds an engagement in a Class Three mile event at Sha Tin next Sunday.
