COLLECTION services have began for oily wastes and noxious liquid wastes generated by vessels using Hongkong harbour, it was announced yesterday.

The first pick-ups were made from container ships at the Sea-Land terminal using a 650-tonne barge purpose-built by Enviropace, which is contracted by the Environmental Protection Department to operate the waste treatment plant on Tsing Yi.

The waste materials were transported to the plant and off-loaded to specially designed storage tanks.

About 170 tonnes of oil-contaminated water and 170 tonnes of chemical-contaminated wash water were collected and would be used in the start-up and trial tests of the plant.
