The Hong Kong Management Association seeks to provide a forum for all local organisations concerned with improving the effectiveness and efficiency of management. It ensures members stay on top of global trends by providing information and training. 'We serve all areas of business,' marketing director Grover Chan said. An integral part of the association's mission is the range of annual competitions open to managers that both recognise their achievements in individual fields and act as an ongoing assessment programme. The association's quality award is one of the most sought-after prizes in the corporate world. Based on the Malcolm Baldrige Award in the United States, the accolade assesses entries on a range of quality standards in areas including leadership, information and analysis, strategic planning, human resource development and management, business results and customer focus and satisfaction. Last year's winner, Island Shangri-La, joined a prestigious fellowship including the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corp, Xerox (Hong Kong) and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. The association offers prizes for the best annual report. There are three categories: non-Hang Seng Index companies, Hang Seng Index companies and non-profit-making bodies. Last year, the Mass Transit Railway Corp, HSBC Holdings and Hong Kong Polytechnic University received gold medals in their respective categories. There are prizes for sales personnel and an award for marketing excellence. Training seminars and lectures also provide a platforms for prominent local and overseas speakers to address senior managers. The association, a non-profit making professional organisation, was established in 1960.
