The New Horizons Vietnamese Refugee Departure Centre in Kwun Tong Road, Kowloon, shut yesterday. The last of its 270 residents has moved to Pillar Point open camp. The Vietnamese population stood at about 1,200 refugees, 660 migrants and 980 illegal immigrants, a government spokesman said. The migrant population reached a peak in October 1991, with more than 64,300 Vietnamese in 14 camps. Since 1975, more than 200,000 had arrived here. The spokesman said: 'This is another major step after the closure of the Kai Tak Vietnamese migrant transit centre, the Whitehead Vietnamese migrants detention centre and the north camp of the High Island detention centre.'
