This month we are going to take a look at a different group of software: shareware and freeware for Windows CE handheld PCs.

Since its introduction last year, Windows CE has made a notable impact on the personal digital assistant market and with the recent release of Version 2 of the Windows CE operating system, the devices are gaining popularity.

This is reflected in the availability of a growing number of applications - commercial, shareware and freeware - for the devices.

Here are three utilities - two shareware and one freeware - which fill in holes in the Windows CE operating system: BugMe! [www.hausof maus.com/bugmece.html] from Haus of Maus provides a quick and easy way to jot down a reminder on a Windows CE handheld and have that reminder pop up at a set time.

With standard software that comes with your Windows CE device, this would require opening the calendar application, finding the date and time you want the reminder to pop up, creating an appointment entry and entering the note - via the keyboard - into the notes tab of the dialogue box.

With BugMe!, you can jot a note quickly using the stylus or with the keyboard (or both), select a time, and the note will pop up as scheduled. Anything you would otherwise write on a Post It note, you would use BugMe!.

The evaluation version of BugMe! lets you create one note and set a single alarm. It costs US$15 to register BugMe!, which can be done on the Web.
