I refer to the letter headlined, 'Cyclists forced to hire taxis' (South China Morning Post, March 12), concerning the carriage of bicycles on board ferries. The Transport Department always encourages members of the public to make good use of the efficient public transport network to alleviate traffic congestion and to protect the environment. Concerning bicycles, they are allowed to be carried on board the cross-harbour ferry service between Hunghom and Wan Chai. They are also allowed on board cross-harbour ferry services run by the Hongkong and Yaumati Ferry Company: North Point-Hunghom, North Point-Kowloon City and North Point-Kwun Tong. Your reader may wish to note that these routes operate on weekdays as well as on Sundays and public holidays. Bicycles which can be folded into the size of hand-carried luggage are also permitted to be carried on board Star Ferry services. LUI YING for the Commissioner for Transport
