For most jazz lovers the highlight of the first - and, to date, only - Hong Kong Jazz and Blues festival was an electrifying performance by John Scofield and his band.
Eight years later Scofield, whose vastly influential playing over the past 20 years has carved out whole new areas of territory for the guitar in jazz, is looking forward to repeating the triumph on Sunday at the Cultural Centre.
'I loved coming to play then and I'm looking forward to coming back. I'm real interested to see how it's changed,' says Scofield from his home in New York.
It will be equally interesting for Hong Kong to see how Scofield has changed. A restless, inventive artist, his music has never stayed in one place for long.
Elements of blues, be-bop, rock and funk jostle for position in an ever-shifting kaleidoscope of styles that add up to one of the most satisfying and influential bodies of work in modern jazz.
Like many players of his generation, Scofield, born in 1951, cut his teeth on rock. The fierce attack in some of the angular areas of his playing still reflect that influence. It was through the blues, however, that he found his pathway into jazz.
