Two prime Chai Wan sites are being considered for the construction of a permanent bus depot and servicing centre for New World's fleet. Transport authorities are proposing to grant the firm an 11,500-square-metre site in the Chai Wan cargo handling area as a depot. It could be accompanied by a 8,350-square-metre site in nearby Shing Tai Road as a maintenance centre. Transport Secretary Nicholas Ng said CMB's facilities would be used until the sites were confirmed and construction completed. He warned if CMB was unwilling to negotiate, the Transport Department had the power to seize depots and facilities to ensure uninterrupted bus services. 'It will take time to construct so before a new depot can be commissioned we have interim measures to make CMB's depots available to New World,' Mr Ng said. 'New World will soon liaise with CMB on the handover of facilities for September 1, and enter into commercial negotiations on the lease of CMB's depots.' CMB's buses may also be used until New World's fleet is commissioned.
