Premier Zhu Rongji told Queen Elizabeth yesterday the smooth handover of Hong Kong offered a boost for Sino-British ties. Mr Zhu, 69, and his wife, Lao An, met the queen at Windsor Castle on their first day in Britain. He is the most senior Chinese leader to visit Britain since the Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989. In fluent English, he stressed the two countries should develop a long-term, stable and co-operative relationship. The queen said she was inspired by positive developments in Hong Kong after the handover.
