'Integrity checks' led to ICAC suspensions
Internal ICAC integrity checks, which include monitoring of business interests and travel to and from the SAR, triggered the investigation that left six officers suspended this week, sources said last night .
Officers from the Independent Commission Against Corruption's internal investigations L Group began the probe after checks raised suspicions of 'an integrity problem' linked to the suspended agents.
The sources did not confirm whether business interests or unauthorised travel was the key to the investigation.
It is thought it could take weeks before a decision is reached on whether to discipline the officers. Even then, the result may be internal punishment, possibly dismissal, rather than criminal prosecution.
All ICAC officers are required to declare their investments in Hong Kong and, under conflict of interest requirements, their interests overseas.
Speculation is rife that the suspensions stem from a long-standing ICAC rift connected to a row between expatriates and locals and the passing of confidential information to former legislative councillors and current legislators.
