SCHNURRBART G/F, 29 D'Aguilar Street Central Tel: 2523-4700 Open: noon-2pm, 6pm-10.30pm, Sunday dinner only This is perhaps better known as a late-night bar for the crowds who come in for the extensive selection of beer and schnapps.
But they also offer a limited selection of huge platters of food at fair prices.
When people think of German food, sausages, large slabs of meat and a dearth of fresh vegetables are what usually come to mind. The menu here won't disappoint if those are what you are after, but they also offer open-faced sandwiches and even one or two vegetarian selections.
Your best bet, though, is to stick to the sausages - several varieties are available. You can have them either as an appetiser (sliced, with toothpicks poking out of the pieces) or as a main course (with sauerkraut and potatoes). It's basic and hearty - unsophisticated, but sometimes this kind of food hits the spot.
Some of the other main courses are not as successful.
The pork cooked in beer is almost throat-chokingly dry. The fried veal is also rather dry and not very flavourful, although a small dab of mustard on each bite helps immensely.
