Two police officers were run down and injured in Kowloon early yesterday morning when a drug gang's getaway car rammed into them. Detectives from Mong Kok Special Duties Unit had set up an ambush to catch suspects involved in an attempted Cheung Sha Wan drugs sale. But when officers moved in on one man loitering near a petrol station in Mei Foo Sun Chuen, he turned and raced for his car. Two officers who ran to cover the vehicle's front and rear ordered the driver to stop but the car lurched forward, leaving one policeman with arm and leg injuries. The vehicle then reversed, slamming into and injuring the detective behind. Officers had drawn their revolvers in a bid to halt the car and arrest the driver and three others as they attempted to flee. No shots were fired. Police said 1,050 grams of high-grade heroin with a street value of some $600,000 were seized from the vehicle.
