Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has no immediate plans to redevelop its flagship hotel in Central, but will explore the idea if an opportunity arises.
Managing director Robert Riley said it would consider redeveloping the 35-year-old Mandarin Oriental Hotel only if it could secure a better site.
Mr Riley said the group would be interested in any well-located site for a new hotel development but it was not in talks for any acquisition.
Speculation suggested it was interested in a site in the Central reclamation area, which is part of the airport railway property development by Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) and Henderson Land Development. Analysts were sceptical SHKP and Henderson would sell their interest in the hotel plot.
Both companies have hotel operations in Hong Kong.
Analysts also said it was unlikely Mandarin Oriental would make such an aggressive move while the outlook for the hotel market was uncertain.
