Zhuhai fish farmers reported fish deaths began yesterday morning, sparking fears the red tide that hit Hong Kong might have spread.

On the outlying island of Guishan, fish farmers said red tide had occasionally appeared since early this month. Most fishermen had moved their fish farms to offshore waters.

Yesterday's fish deaths cost them more than three million yuan (about HK$2.8 million).

About 10 experts arrived in Zhuhai from Guangzhou and took water and dead fish samples for laboratory tests.

Dr Qi Ruzao, of Jinan University in Guangzhou, who studies red tide problems in southern China, said they wanted to determine the type of micro-organisms causing red tide in Zhuhai.
