WE refer to Mr Philip Keen's letter headlined, ''Thick clouds of black smoke'' (South China Morning Post, March 11) concerning the emission of black smoke by our ferries.
We are aware of existing legislation governing the duration and concentration of smoke emitted. Our company has always closely monitored the emission of dark smoke by our ferries, in particular, during berthing and unberthing of vessels where power requirement or fuel injection would be at its peak. Our engineering department has been instructed to keep the engines of our vessels in good repair and maintenance to ensure that incomplete combustion (which is a main contributing factor to emission of dark smoke) is kept to a very minimum.
We thank Mr Keen for bringing this matter to our attention.
