A modern port is taking shape in the Taicang Port Development Zone in eastern China's Jiangsu province after five years of construction.

The port is on the south bank of the Yangtze River estuary.

The port zone has approved 28 joint ventures, attracting total investment of 8.97 billion yuan (about HK$8.3 billion) since 1993, according to a China Daily report. Foreign investment accounted for 34 per cent of the total.

International and domestic petrochemical companies, raw materials enterprises, the China Ocean Shipping Corporation International City and Huaneng Power Plant have all taken root in the zone.

The port aims to be one of the two key elements of the container hub of the Shanghai International Navigation Centre. The other is Beilun Port in Ningbo, Zhejiang province.

The port zone is about 50 kilometres from central Shanghai, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, the Pudong New Area and the Suzhou-Singapore Industrial Park.
